01

A rat inspection grades the property exterior

NYC Health rodent inspections record conditions found on the lot, including failed inspections for rat activity and follow-up actions such as baiting or cleanup. Apartment Fax connects those results with housing complaints and pest violations for the address.

A DOHMH rodent inspection covers exterior areas such as the yard, refuse area or lot. It does not prove rats were found inside a particular apartment, and a 311 rat report is not the same as a failed inspection.

03

Inspection results carry more weight than a map pin

The official Rat Information Portal maps inspections and follow-up actions. A failed inspection for rat activity is a dated agency observation, while bait applied or cleanup done describes a response. Reading the result and sequence is more useful than seeing that the address appears on a map.

Apartment Fax keeps those exterior records separate from complaints and interior housing conditions. That prevents a lot inspection from being mislabeled as rats inside an apartment while still showing a documented pest signal at the property.

04

Look for recurrence and follow-up

One old failed inspection followed by passing results means something different from repeated failures or recurring resident complaints. Review the newest result first, then look backward for the same pattern across seasons and years.

Pest activity can change quickly, so public history is not a present-condition guarantee. Inspect refuse areas, the basement and the apartment during a visit, and ask what pest-control work was completed after any recent failure.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the NYC rat map for an address?

Search the address or borough-block-lot number in the Rat Information Portal and review inspection results and follow-up actions. Apartment Fax adds related housing pest records.

Does a failed rat inspection mean rats were inside an apartment?

No. The Health Department inspection concerns the property exterior and lot. Interior conditions require separate complaint or inspection evidence.

What rat records matter before renting?

Recent repeated failures, unresolved-looking sequences and matching housing complaints deserve attention, especially when later passing inspections or cleanup actions are absent.
