NYC rent registration records

Research an NYC apartment’s rent history

Review available rent-registration signals and the building record before you sign, then use the official DHCR process when you need the apartment’s authoritative rent history.

01

Start with the apartment, not the asking rent

An apartment rent history can show annual registrations, reported legal rents and status information for a regulated unit. Apartment Fax organizes available rent-registration signals with the property’s age, unit count, ownership and housing record so you can identify gaps or changes worth investigating.

The official DHCR apartment rent history is confidential. New York State says it may be released only to the legal tenant, building owner or an authorized representative. Apartment Fax is a research aid, not a certified DHCR record.

03

What the official rent history can show

For a rent-regulated apartment, owners register rent and status information with New York State. The resulting apartment history can help a legal tenant understand reported rents, registration years and changes in status. It is a unit-level record, not a general background check on a renter.

New York State HCR provides the authoritative request process. A legal tenant can request the record through Rent Connect and have it mailed to the apartment or building address. Owners and authorized representatives have their own access paths.

04

How to read changes and missing years

A registration gap or large change deserves a question, but it is not proof by itself that the rent is unlawful. Exemptions, renovations, reporting history and the apartment’s legal status can all affect what appears in the record.

Use the Apartment Fax report to place the rent trail beside ownership changes, building work and housing conditions. If the history looks unclear or conflicts with the lease, take the official DHCR record to a qualified tenant attorney or housing counselor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my apartment rent history in NYC?

The legal tenant can request the official apartment rent history from New York State HCR through Rent Connect. HCR can mail the record directly to the apartment or building address.

Can I look up another person’s rental history?

This page concerns the registered history of an apartment, not a person’s tenant-screening history. Official DHCR apartment records are confidential and access is restricted.

Does a registration gap prove an illegal rent?

No. A gap is a reason to investigate, not a legal conclusion. Review the complete official record and get qualified advice if the apartment’s status or rent is disputed.
